What is a Code Retreat?

Coderetreat is a day-long, intensive practice event, focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design. By providing developers the opportunity to take part in focused practice, away from the pressures of ‘getting things done’, the coderetreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of skill improvement. Practicing the basic principles of modular and object-oriented design, developers can improve their ability to write code that minimizes the cost of change over time.

Coderetreat has an established, time-tested format that is optimized for focused practice.

Problem: Conway’s Game of Life

Length of Session: 45 minutes

Duration: 8.30am to 5 or 6pm (this still on or times slided a bit)

Pair-programming is necessary, as the knowledge transfer contained in that activity is essential to the practice

Prefer using Test-Driven Development (TDD)

After each session, pairs should be swapped

After each session, code must be deleted, not put in a branch, not stashed, just deleted with no trace left

The Day

The coderetreat day consists of 5-6 sessions, each session’s learnings building upon previous sessions. The morning focuses on becoming comfortable with the problem domain, breaking old habits and beginning focused self-discovery. The afternoon pushes the envelope by challenging pairs to stretch their skills and understanding of abstractions, modular design and test-driven development.

With most groups, the focus should be on the fundamentals of software development and modular design, primarily the 4 rules of simple design. Spend the day practicing these concepts, rather than pushing into new learnings.

Code Retreat Dublin

At coding day HQ we will be launching our first (of many) code retreat. For those unfamiliar with a code retreat, it’s a hack day with a focus, the angle placed solidly on solving interesting technical problems.

For the inaugrual code retreat the focus will be on scientific related problems. More details on these will follow, so follow look out #coderetreatdub hashtag on twitter and updates to the blog here.

How the code retreat will work:

On the event itself a hacker will be paired up with some from science background where possible with suggested problems to solve, however, before the event itself we will have some problems listed that hackers/scientists can work on.

You can pair up with someone before the event or on the event itself.

On the day itself just bring your laptops along and a fun attitude, if you have any interesting problems please bring them along also.

The event is open to all skill levels, there will be more experienced coders there on the day to help out, in terms of the languages and development there will be people the following skills:

- Ruby

- Python

- C#

- PHP

Java

The goals of the coding retreat are to work with others & and learn how to solve interesting science-y problems.

We need some help with this as it’s our first time running this, so we are looking for you to get the word out and get some scientists or engineers involved. So please Tweet a link to this post to encourage more scientists to get involved.

The third Irish Open Space Coding Day is being held on the

11th of September - 11AM

Enterprise Ireland Offices (Clontarf in Dublin View Map).

OSCD WTF?

The idea is simple. We (that means you too) get together to write code, have fun and learn from each other.

We take an Open Spaces approach to organisation. You turn up with a laptop and a few ideas about things you’d like to show or things you’d like to learn. On the day we spend a short amount of time going through the things people are interested in and decide how we should split up into groups so that we can all get something out of the day. Each group goes off for about two hours to code something. At the end of each session the code is checked into a central repository and we all get together again to sort out the next session.

We focus mainly on .NET but welcome people with other programming backgrounds and skills just bear in mind that most of the discussion is likely to focus around how to get things done using .NET.

Update: Two Windows Phone 7 will be available on the day to play around (i.e. they wont be given away, but just to play with them and deploy apps to them)

Note: Open Spaces Coding Day idea comes from Alan’s Dean’s Open Spaces Coding Day in the Uk.

Want to come? Register here

Social

After the event we are going to have a few drinks location TBC (tho probably The Yatch)
